Below is meant to be a general guide for new students who are curious about joining a class. Always make sure to look into the specific class information when signing up. To connect with the local community make sure to join the Facebook group!

  • Yes! Come to your first class prepared to be kind to yourself. These classes are not a competition. A movement may not look exactly the same on your as it does for someone else and that is OKay! We each pick up different moves and techniques at different rates. Never judge yourself against the others in the class.

  • NO! Some classic are specific for adults or seniors so make sure to read the class descriptions.

  • No! This is a dance form that is for every human body.

  • Yes! Your teachers will explain more but the high level answer is that it is a low impact exercise that CAN help with: Muscle toning, posture, flexibility, balance and coordination, cardiovascular health, stress reduction, pelvic floor health and body confidence.

    The mental health benefits are worth noting too! From engaging your brain and body together, memory, and the perks of socialization.


    Please note: we are not doctors. This is not a medical statement. Please check with your physician before starting new exercises and ask your teachers if you need any accommodations. Many of the teachers have spent significant time studying the body and movements.

  • Wear something that allows for freedom of movement and that you feel comfortable in. There’s no need to show your belly if you don’t want to! Something like jeans that could constrict your movement wouldn’t be a first great class choice. Please note that you will not be able to wear street shoes on the dance floors and socks can be slippery. Most students opt for bare feet, yoga socks, ballet shoes, clean sneakers, or jazz shoes.

  • These teachers are responsive, helpful, and supportive. Reach out to them! The teachers page has a link to get to their direct page or contact info.

  • Read the course descriptions. Many of these classes are walk in friendly, but some do require advance sign up.

  • If you want a private class for any reason most teachers can offer that. please reach out to them directly.

  • Many of the class descriptions will mention learning a choreography for the Iron Smoke Distillery Showcase. This is optional! You’re welcome to join the class and learn the choreo even if you don’t want to perform.

  • It’s a chance for classes and dancers to show what they have been working on in an uplifting and supportive environment. Check out the events calendar! It’s also a great chance to socialize with other folks in the community and see other styles of dance. Come and be inspired!

  • The various dances come from very rich cultures and traditions. Your teachers will often give some history on the dances that they are teaching, and you are encouraged to try to learn more on the side. Please be mindful that some terms have become problematic and should be avoided. The up side is: there is so much for your mind and body to learn!
